When we were growing up, there wasn't room in our house for a dog. Oh, we begged, Lois and I, and finally got Chipper, a beagle who was tied up outside where he barked and cried until Dad promised us he'd found a "nice home on a farm in the country" for him when, in fact, he later admitted that he had driven out in the country and let the dog out to fend for himself. I've tried to tell myself he was probably happier, that at least he could run loose and chase rabbits. But I think of dogs as family members, not hunters and not creatures to be tied or chained outside.
Enter Bethany Claire, our family dog lover and authority on all things dog. This girl loves dogs, and as soon as she was old enough, she got her own dog and proved to all of us that she was serious about her passion. Harvard Charles (Harvey), seen below, is now 14 years old and is so obedient that he is like a well-mannered person wearing a dog suit. I've never known another dog even remotely like Harvey, the love of my daughter's life.
In order to keep Harvey all to herself and not have to share him with her husband Dave, she bought Dave his own Australian Shepherd, the intense, athletic and driven Kirby, seen here in a scene from his trip last summer with Beth to "Camp Gone to the Dogs" in Vermont.
Kirby is a tireless dog, a dog with an agenda who comes from a line of proven search-and-rescue dogs. Of course, like all dogs, he bonded with Beth rather than with Dave.Beth found the perfect dog for me when a rescue woman brought a group of dogs from a "kill shelter" in North Carolina to her veterinary practice. Having an instinct for what makes a dog a good pet, she culled Fiona from the herd. She's a shaggy dog of questionable pedigree, but she's a joy.

But the dog who won my heart and soul was Zach's dog Desi, pictured below in my garage with her favorite moo-cow in her soft retriever mouth. Untrained and strong as an ox, she became a lovely companion to Zach and to me. She died last August, and I miss her dearly. Desi, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, was loyal and stubborn to a fault, but she was sweet and devoted and goofy.

Wait! There's more. Mitch and Laurie have a beautiful Rottie named Cub. He's something of a rascal but belies the mean and aggressive reputation of Rottweilers. He is their third Rottie, following Mia and Ilsa, both of whom died of cancer.
The newest member of the family is a delightful old beagle Beth rescued for her dad. Barney is, by Beth's description, a "regal beagle," and she had a hard time parting with him after she found him for Steve. But she's a good daughter, so Barney is sharing his golden years with her dad. Meet Barney.
If there's a lesson here, it's that you can't have too many dogs in the family. If there's another lesson, it's that if you have this many dogs in the family, you need a family member who is a veterinarian.

Oh, you beat me to this topic -- and did a great job! But there's no photo of LouBoo so I guess he'll have to have an entry all his own!! :)
I think I'll sit on my hands for a while and hear from the rest of the peanut gallery. And of course Loo-Boo should have his own entry! None for Lib and Johnny, but, hey, get your priorities straight, woman. Let's hear about Loo-Boo who has all these cousins he doesn't know about.
Looks like you've all "gone to the dogs" :)
My pick would definitely be Steve's beagle! They always look so sad, and say "please be my friend" .
Barney is an awfully nice-looking beagle! Walt has always wanted a beagle, but I think his "own" dog needs to be a BIG one that can reach his lap. If you run across a giant beagle, let me know. ;) Of course Desi was the dearest of all so maybe a Chessie for him?
And Nan, I was sort of hoping YOU would do Libby and Johnny entries, or they would do each other, but they are both super busy right now so their entries might have to wait.
I, on the other hand, am NOT busy, and therefore have no creative juices flowing.
Help!
If you only knew how Beth struggled to give that beagle to her dog once she had rescued him. She is completely in love with Barney, definitely a former hunting dog turned out when he got too old and the runt of his litter. He's only 20 pounds but a perfect dog. Steve is thrilled to have him. I've told Beth she should have her own business, matching dogs to owners. She's gifted.
I've looked at other beagles on petfinder.com, and none is as handsome and "perfect" as Barney! :)
The only mistake Beth made was thinking I needed an Aussie and not realizing we aren't a good match because I AM an Aussie - every vigilent, needing a job to do or making trouble. ;) I would still take my Hazel back and fight through her fears with her now, though, but I suspect she was euthanized. Poor messed up Hazel. It wasn't her fault!
I meant she struggled to give it to her dad, not her dog. I need Eye Spy Proofreading.
I do find it frustrating that it's not easy to edit our "comments" like we can edit our original posts. I usually do a Preview first but often still don't find typos. Oh, well, we're among friends here. ;)
Oh Ho, stand down there LoPo. If I do remember correctly (and I do, my memory is a steel trap) the Aussie was YOUR idea and I, in full understanding of the Aussie temperament, tried dutifully to dissuade you. I didstinctly remember suggesting an an adult lab or golden and was pooh-poohed. The moral of this story is that I am never wrong. Especially about dogs. Wait, I adopted Pony. Never mind. ;)
I still pine for Barney, my lap-beagle. And, as I have been away from him for 4, soon to be 5 whole days, I am seriously pining for Harvard Charles and his soft snooey little furs.
You're sooo right, Anonymous!! I did want an Aussie and I still do, dammit!! I just like to have selective memory when it suits me, OK?? And I'm the senior relative here so you have to indulge me. You young 'uns weren't smacked enuff, I can tell that!! ;)
Where are you that Harvard Charles isn't with you??? =0
I just realized you're in Florida and I'm here! BAD AUNT! I should be home so you could've stolen a couple of days at the beach!
I AM in Florida and it is lovely. I saw a dolphin in Tampa Bay, which was totally exciting. Have yet to see the beach though. Not even sure where it is...
Only 12 more hours until I see my Harvey again. I am all excited. It's kind of sad, actually. I am pathetic.
I am posting as anonymous because I forgot my username and password. So from here on out, I shall be known as "anonymous".
No, we already have a REAL anonymous so we'll just send you another "invite" and you can sign up all over again. Or just, ah ha, choose "Name/URL" and put, hmmm, BETH??? ;)
You're telling me how much you miss Harvey Barvey? I, of the 8 day trips in order to have LouBoo with me at all times?? :)
