If we're lucky, we have a friend who is part of the family, a person who accepts us just as we are, who celebrates all of life's ups and downs with us, who is always there when we need her. For me, Suzi is that friend. Here I would like to raise a toast to friendship.
Preparing to protest the war in Washington, March 2003
When we were in high school and we lived on Dalton Ave., Suzi lived less than a block away, on the corner of Dalton and Avon. We had known each other since third or fourth grade, but living close by gave us a chance to form bonds that have seen us through many decades. We are growing old together and expect to see each other through many more difficult and joyful times.Rita has such a friend in Darla, Lois in Jeannie, so in many ways these women are our sisters -- a part of our history and our family. Friendships enrich our lives. They are gifts from God. Today, I offer a special thanks for our dearest friends who, like it or not, are part of our extended family.

I wonder if they'll start picketing against that "extended family" part?? :) I love the Guy Clark song, "Old Friends." I wish I could put a link to it here so I could share it with you guys if you haven't heard it! Anyway, yeah, they're the best!! :)
Yes, friends ARE a true gift, and I am very thankful for mine. If you are a person who thinks you do not need a true friend; then you have missed one of the greatest gifts one could have! When I think how many years Darla and I have been friends-almost 60 years, it warms my heart, and yes, she is a sister to me:)
One difference is that, unlike siblings; Darla and I have never had a cross word with each other in all these many years:)
Maybe because you never had to share a bedroom with Darla. ;} But I don't remember having cross words with YOU ever. Do you?
And I, Nan, apologize for cross words spoken but now, apparently, forgotten. Friendships don't have the family entanglements that sisters have, like who did Mom love most, who got the hardest row to hoe.
Sometimes cross words are said in hope of being reassured that we're loved anyway.
I love you both.
Actually, I was not thinking of cross words with either one of my little sisters-it was a generalized comment comment that is always echoed about "sibling arguments"- :)!!!
