Going home

My favorite place in Athens has nothing to do with the university or any of the places we once lived that now seem changed forever. Court St., once the center of my universe, holds no meaning for me now.

No, the place that captures my heart is White's Mill, maybe because it seems timeless, tucked into that bend in the river. It's my Athens landmark and the only place I feel a need to see when I'm back home.

This week Rita and Don will be heading north, back to take a load of their things to what was Mom's and Dad's house and is now theirs, back to the place that whispers "home" in their hearts. I don't know what their favorite spot is, but they know every back road and stream and hillside in Athens County, so they probably have many favorites, depending on the season.

For about 40 years, they have had a longing to return to the hills of Southeast Ohio, and I know that those old hills and valleys are waiting to welcome them home. For me, they are a part of memory, but for Rita and Don, they are both memory and future. There's nothing in the world like going home. Drive safely and enjoy the ride, my sister.

Sister Nan, how very thoughtful of you! I guess I didn't have to remind you we are getting ready to head "HOME"....what a beautiful send off. Love you!

PS You missed your calling! Your writings are beautiful and carry so much sentiment :)

I just want to add how much it means to me that you two will be living in Mom's and Dad's home instead of, gulp, strangers. I love you both and am so glad it's yours now. It feels like that's as it should be.
