Cecilia and Kate visit Granny

Cecilia and her best friend Kate, sharing iPod earbuds so they can listen to a favorite song together, are inseparable, as you can see from these pictures taken in my living room earlier this week.

We've written about how best friends can lift us up, make us laugh, complete us in a way nobody else can. And just a day with these two lifted my own gloom and gave me hope for the future. Adorable, smart, polite and agreeable, they are also far from the "duh" image teen-agers have. They are close to their families, considerate, funny and perceptive.

Being New Hampshire girls, they don't take things for granted, and they know about long winters and hard work. If these are the faces of our future, take heart: We're in good hands here.

Today they are on their way home, probably landing in Manchester about the time I post this entry. Thank you both -- and Beth, too -- for being exactly who you are.
