In keeping with tradition, I did not greet the new year awake. Instead, I was in bed with my head under the covers.A new beginning is a time for optimism, even for an Eeyore like me, and surely inaugurating Barack Obama is reason for optimism; but there are also things that go bump in the night and other shoes to drop.
Still, just as Cecilia is trying to make the best out of another long winter, and I tried to find something to like about summer, I try on this frigid first morning of 2009 to imagine a hopeful, happier year ahead.
For those with nothing to lose, I hope for jobs, housing, food on the table, dignity and someone to love.
For those having to make do or pare back, I hope for satisfaction in learning they can meet the challenge.
For those who are lonely, I hope for friendship and comfort.
For those who are lost, I hope for an angel to light their paths.
And for those in despair, I hope for hope.
I realize that hope will not be enough. We may receive grace without works, but works are what we sorely need right now. What's that little quip? Be the change you hope to see in the world. That's a good place to start.
2009. Bring it on.
