And Lily makes three

Nearly 10 years ago, when our family was devastated by Zach's illness and trying to find help for him, I was seeking any port in a storm -- drugs, therapy, whatever was available. My daughter silently wrote on the corner of a piece of paper just this: Rx one dog. She knew even then, long before she became a veterinarian, about the healing power of dogs.

For a long time, it was Zach's beloved Chessie, Desdemona, that provided the healing, but she wasn't mine, and she died last year. Then two years ago, Beth found the perfect dog for me: a shaggy little mutt named Fiona. She moved right in and claimed her place in our home and hearts. Everyone but our cat welcomed her.

Now, much to Lily Cat's chagrin, Fiona loves to burrow in for a good nap on the sofa
, appropriating as much space as possible, refusing to budge an inch and relegating Lily to another spot.

On this particular occasion, an emboldened Lily shoved her butt into Fifi's head and claimed her rightful place on my chest. She is a notoriously wussy cat, so I was proud of her for standing up (or down) to the fierce Fiona.

Just like Peck, Beth was right. Rx: one dog.

Go, Lily!! She DEALT!! :) Who needs a man to sleep with when you've got those two?? (Shh. Don't tell the guys!)

Your timing on this entry hit me like a ton of bricks! Louie is my BUDDY and I just can't give him away to just anybody, and my Spanish teacher (and various others) think I should have him put to sleep especially after my last trip, but you know, he's my BUDDY. I just can't! I think I'll look for my own little teeny Scottie trailer or something so that when we travel we don't have to worry about motels that rent to creeps but not dogs like Lou Boo. This is such a conflict for me! The Mexicans say, "But he's a DOG," but DOG spelled backwards is "GOD." When I go to sleep at night with him sleeping up against my leg I just melt into sleep. What a dilemma it causes that he's too big to take in-cabin. Stupid airlines. :(

I see some room around your head there. Perfect spot for another dog...

You wouldn't be thinking of Kirby, would you?

And, Loie, you won't have Louie forever, so just try to enjoy him while you have him. Dad would have agreed with the Mexicans. He didn't think a dog had any place in a house. But when I went there with Desi and Fiona, he was great with them! That was a wonderful thing about our dad. He had rules out the wazoo but just as many exceptions to the rules. ;)

Enjoying Louie is one thing when I'm settled and another when I'm 8 days on the road again, and being bitten black and blue by him. :(

I wonder if we should get a Yucatecan dog to show Louie how to be a DOG. If I have one dog, why not 2, or 5??

Because if you had two or five, they might form a pack with you at the bottom? And imagine walking even one more dog a day. Does Louie even like other dogs?

Well, he liked my doctor's shih tzu, Pugsly. They actually sort of played together, half-hearted trying to decide who wanted to dominate whom. (So you think I'd be at the bottom of the pack, huh? Hmmm. You could be right. Alpha I ain't!! ;))
