The Little House

I met my great grandparents once when I was very young. We were all visiting Grandma maybe a year after she and George had moved to Shepardstown. Great-Grandad tried to make jokes with me about the state of the world or use sarcasm to entertain me, having no idea that I could barely understand half of what he was saying. He did make me laugh though, his charm and confidence did that without him even trying. Great-Gramie was the quiet one and I naturally was drawn more towards her and her stories about things a long time ago.

We went to the little house where now standing by it I am almost the same height as it. For me, at six, it was my size exactly. It was a magic world where everything was the right size and I couldn’t imagine how anyone would be so huge that they could not fit into the house without bumping their head. Gramie was a little woman but still clearly much too big to be wandering around the little house. She still followed me around the house bumping her head here and there but still holding my hand and letting me pull her around.

I went back to the little house maybe a year or two ago. I was then thirteen or so and towered over the door, nearly over the whole house. I couldn’t go in because it was closed but I’m sure if I did I would have bumped my head on the ceiling and lights and not gone upstairs for fear of breaking something or hurting myself. Standing in front of the door to the little house all I could remember was my little great-gramie bumping her head as she followed me around in the house of my dreams.

Cecilia, I can just picture this except -- where is this little house? Real or in your dreams? Have I seen it? :)

Thank you, darling great-granddaughter, for sharing your memories of the little house and my mom. She was so cute that day! Remember the puppet show we went to? Somewhere I have a picture of you and your great-granny talking to the puppet!

If I can find a photo of the little house, I'll try to add it to your post. You're the best!
