Circa 1840, the original Toll House in Shepherdstown, an historic landmarkWhen I first saw that this little house was for rent, it literally called my name -- or rather my sister's name. It wanted LoPo to come and take up residence there, close enough to see me whenever she wants but within walking distance of everything that's magical about this little town.
At first inquiry, I found out that the owner wanted no pets (But Loo-Boo's not really a dog, exactly, I thought), a year's lease and $1200 a month.
No can do. Put the dream away. But it has stayed empty in a dead real estate market that will be even less active in the summer as the students leave town. There it was, waiting for my sister, all lonely and empty......until I encouraged her to make any reasonable offer, to see if the owner wouldn't rather have some income to offset his extensive renovations rather than none at all.
And what do you know? When asked, he agreed to a three-month lease, with a dog, at a reduced cost!
Our secret dream has come true! Loie will get to live in Shepherdstown for three months this summer, and, oh, we will do such wondrous things together! Tonight, I am singing the praises of how God works in wondrous and unexpected ways and how sometimes, when you're very blessed, some wonderful gift is given to you, just for the asking.
See you soon, Loie. You'll have your little hideaway where the train goes by and rattles your windows, you can walk all over town with Louie, visit me, read and paint and have a wonderful vacation. We can go to the free Appalachian music sessions across the street from you every Thursday night at O'Hurley's General Store, the Sunday morning farm market, my church, the darling public library, the Lost Dog Cafe, the C&O to walk our doggies. And you'll see a lot of my happy face at your little back door.

Good job, sisters-This is just the cutest little house :)
How exciting for the two of you-I'm so happy that you will be able to be close enough to see each other EVERY day; just like when you were "the kids" :)
You mean we're not "the kids" anymore?? ;) I sure hope we can find those little girls this summer!! :) I'm sooo excited! =) And we'll drive over to see Big Sis, too!! :)
Hooray! I wanna come play too! When does this party start?
I don't know Bethy, I think we might be S-O-L on this one.
why SOL? I live close. I can go play. Am I persona non grata? Uninvited? Do I smell? I mean, I know I do, but not THAT bad.
If I'm not invited, I'm gonna crash the party.
The big party starts June 15 when the lease starts, but I'm already partying hearty. Of course you're invited. We can gather around and commune with ghosts and feel the whole house shake every time the train goes by. And the kitchen, Johnny, is to die for.
When you come, bring your bike and do the entire C&O path from Cumberland, Md. to Georgetown (only about 178 miles). Now there's a challenge for you!
Bethy, you are welcome to crash at regular intervals, I'm sure.
Ya'll come.
I'm even bringing a sofa sleeper all the way from Mexico so I'll have an extra bed! And Nan, you have a roll-away, huh? We're slipping in there under the guise of my being a fine upstanding old lady tenant with her quiet little dog. Won't they be surprised!! ;)
Did I mention that the police department is practically across the street?
All I can say is- y'all better bake some cookies. Chocolate chip.
that is so exciting!!!
you showed us that house.
hey!
is my little green truck still there?
i love it!
i wish i could come crash too!
You can, of course! :)
Won't you be coming down when your brother is born? I didn't see the truck today, but I'll look again tomorrow.
yes, i will be.
i love my truck!
I saw the truck today! It's still there, still green, still calling your name!
Does this mean Cecilia is soon going to be driving? Tell me about this green truck!!! :)
I took pictures today, so I'll post them as soon as Loie and Walt stop traveling and get the political compass scores in.
