Lost without a compass

flickr.com

Some of us are good at sensing directions and don't need a compass, let alone a GPS system. Dad always seemed to be able to get his bearings and knew instinctively which way was North or South.

Then we have our inner "moral compass," the thing that tells us what's "right" and what's "wrong," no matter what everyone else around us is doing.

There's another interesting compass that I think is useful, especially in this political campaign season. It's called, appropriately enough, the "political compass," and Mitch introduced me to it about a year ago.

When we talk about being on the right or on the left, we can be talking about social issues, economic issues, or both. When someone tells me I'm "too liberal," he or she usually means I'm too far left. Same with the "right wing," meaning very conservative. Seems that there are not many moderates left in this polarized nation. So are you more authoritarian or libertarian? Are you economically conservative but socially liberal -- or vice versa?

Most of you who read this obscure blog have probably already taken the test at www.politicalcompass.org, but I thought it would be fun to see how we score collectively. So here's my challenge: Go to the Web site, take the test, write down your two scores and post the results in the comments (or send to me by e-mail). Then we'll do an average to find out where we are as a connected group of family, friends, loved ones.

Remember, nobody is right or wrong. It's just a useful tool for understanding each other, and the test is private. If you don't want to share the results, then keep them to yourself. But the rest of us will be wondering what you're hiding!

When people ask me how I got to be so far left, I think about growing up in a household of extreme opinions, from Grandad's socialist leanings to Dad's anarchic positions to Don's conservative views that contrast with his liberal appearance. We're a true melting pot, and I celebrate that we all managed to learn to think for ourselves and create a rainbow of viewpoints.

Take the test. Report your scores. Let's see who gets the prize for being outstanding in their respective fields.

First to report in -- our economist, Laurie: Economic scale -- -3.00; social scale -- -2.87.

Who's next?

Okie dokie, here's mine:

I'll have Mitch take it tonight. I'm betting that he will edge over into Libertarian Right territory.

And mine:

Economic Left/Right: -8.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.44

Time to horrify my mother.

Economic Left/Right 6.75
Social Scale -5.54

I love how the chart shows no one in my quadrant of the equation. I also don't know how I didn't go all the way left on the social scale. I pretty much believe everyone should be free to do what they want without infringing on others. I am entering Ron Paul wackoville on the economic end, but never fear, I don't have a candidate on either side that supports me there, so a Democrat I remain.

Nannygoat said...

Mitch, is that a 6.75 without a minus in front of it??? You've been body-snatched!

Happy to have great company in that bottom left quadrant!

Economic Left/Right: -7.00

We still need Loie, Walt, Johnny and John and Bernie, as well as any other regulars on the blog. Then I'll try to plot a graph that represents all of us.

This is fun!

Too pooped to take it again tonight but will when I get off the road.( I do remember that I am in the "Ghandi" quadrant, but don't remember the exact numbers.) I'll send Walt a note to take it, too!

LoPo said...

Well. Surprise. My economic score is -0.25 and social is -6.36!

Nannygoat said...

You barely squeaked into the ever-popular libertarian left there, sister.

LoPo said...

How can that be? It must be because I've been on the road so long. Which questions put me there? Did I incorrectly pick that I love multi-nationals or something????

COMING SOON: THE AJAX ROCK SITTERS' OWN POLITICAL COMPASS!!!

Anonymous said...

For the record I retook the test and really thought hard about my answers. The results changed a bit, but not too much:

Economic + 5.38
Social - 6.56

My favorite question was:

those who are able to work, and refuse the opportunity, should not expect society's support.

There is a Simpson quote for everything and this one comes from Ned Flanders:

Todd: Daddy, what are taxes paying for?
Ned: Ohoho ... everything! Policemen, trees, sunshine, and let's not forget the folks who just don't feel like working, God bless 'em!

I think maybe I ended up so far to the right because I took questions like this completely literally. I would prefer to support those who are unable to work and let those who don't want to to fend for themselves. Where I would differ from the right wing is in wanting to, and being willing to, support those who can't work at a high enough income to support their families.

Apologies for sounding defensive, I just don't want to be the black sheep of the family.

Cecilia said...

i answered the same way on that question.
so you aren't totally black sheep like.

Nannygoat said...

My little black sheep, it is not so bad out there in the pasture. I was always the black sheep in my family and learned to adapt to the reality of it.

I think that my answers were sometimes knee-jerk responses to my intuition about the way the economic world works and not necessarily reality-based. However, I can't help but notice that your economist wife has a different take on things. When I see you Sunday, we can compare notes. As a true liberal, I'm rootin-tootin proud of raising a free-thinker! ;)

LoPo said...

And I answered the same way as Mitch and Cecilia on that question. Knee-jerk answers were impossible for me. I think about this stuff a LOT. Also, I'm basically a free market person, and the question about serving humanity vs. stockholders was a weird one for me. It seems that in the best of worlds, eventually the market would demand that the customers needs be met or they wouldn't buy. I think using words like "humanity" show the bias of the test. What would be fun is a round table discussion on every question at our next family reunion. :)

Cecilia said...

I could go for a family reunion.

Brother John reports in:
Economic Left/Right: -2.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.46

Bernie declines.

Nannygoat said...

And finally, Loie, our road-warrior rests up and re-takes the test.

Economic Left/Right: -4.62
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.90

Come back soon to see our collective personal compass on Ajax Rock!
